CHARACTER NAME: Utsubushi
SERIES: Amatsuki
CANON POINT: Chapter 59
AGE: Not given, though it's likely in human years his form is quite young.
APPEARANCE: Here and here.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY: Utsubushi may be considered a minor character in Amatsuki, but that doesn't make him short on personality. First introduced in chapter 9, one gets a feeling for him straight away: he functions as a retainer to Bonten, the Heaven's Seat, serving his needs with only minor complaint but utmost loyalty. As the series progresses we see this further expanded, showing his dedication to his creator and undeniable "mother hen" tendencies that are frequently tested by both Bonten and his tree spirit companion, Tsuyukusa. A chronic worrier, he is frequently in a state of distress due to the aggressive attitudes of the pair, as seen when Tsuyukusa strikes out on his own to assist a fox spirit and Bonten's subsequent reaction of irritation and physical assault towards his retainer. Despite this it is clear he holds no grudge with either; he may behave in a put-upon fashion and even go so far as to remark unhappily on the unsavory behavior of both ayakashi, but he clearly accepts this to simply be a part of who they are and not something to be taken personally. This is particularly clear with his interaction with Bonten. He is certainly not without complaint over his creator's behavior and attitude, but he remains steadfast and loyal to his very core, serving his every need and protecting him from harm when he's unable to do so himself. Though he considers the Heaven's Seat to be his father of sorts, one could say he is far more of the parental figure in their interactions -- though sadly lacking in the accompanying authority.

His interactions with the human race have only just begun to grow more frequent in recent chapters. Unlike most of his brethren ayakashi, he doesn't appear to hold any direct ill will towards what is considered the mortal enemy of his kind. With most humans he is even-tempered and polite, though one may say he handles them as one might deal with a wayward child. He shares Bonten's views of humanity, and thus sees them as creatures that are capable of far more than simply destruction and mindless violence against demonkind; his faith in that is demonstrated in his assistance and protection of Tokidoki in the most recent arc, even acting as a shield to keep him safe from the attacks of the yakou. Still, he has no close connection with them as one sees with Tsuyukusa, rarely addressing any human by name or title and instead calling them just that: "human." There's always a sense of distance there that he maintains, even as he risks his life for the people he's just coming to know.

For Utsubushi, this is nothing unusual; while he clearly enjoys these new connections, they are not deemed necessary in his life. They are important to him only because they're important to Bonten. While he is his own person with his own thoughts and personality, he considers Bonten the center of his world, and it shows. He is the one that watches over the Heaven's Seat and nothing could be more important to him than that. Even the fact that he isn't his creator's confidant - he's admitted he knows very little about Bon - doesn't seem to bother him, as that would serve to only benefit his desires rather than his master's. While the situation has yet to arise, one can expect that Utsubushi would lay down his life to further Bonten's goals without a moment's hesitation, like a samurai for his lord. He may have a sense of self, and even be capable of disagreements with Bonten over matters, but he was given this life by the Heaven's Seat and to the Heaven's Seat it will always belong.

ABILITIES:
Flight: Utsubushi's wingspan is such as to allow him to lift not only his own weight, but the weight of at least one other. In the manga he is capable of summoning his wings at will, but in EV he will have them full-time.
Transformation: Utsubushi has shown he is capable of transforming from his humanoid form to a fully avian body of a variety of sizes, depending on the purpose; for information gathering he is roughly the size of a condor, while for transportation he is large enough to carry several people at once (about the size of the mythical roc). These forms are not used for battle. His transformation abilities will be reduced to once an hour.
Strength and Endurance: Designed to be an aide to Bonten, he is build to last: Utsubushi can take a great deal of damage, acting as a shield for comrades. While he is able to dish out his fair share of attacks as well, it's shown that his strength lies in his ability to take both physical and mystical attacks that would decimate most opponents.

POSSESSIONS: His clothing, and a tool set full of combs and brushes.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[ The feed opens as audio only at first, though the video feed is on; it captures nothing but darkness, the sound of irate mumbling muffled by whatever's wrapped around the phone. ]

-must be some form of black magic, to create such a strange little box-

[ More noise and fumbling before an unhappy grunt accompanies the phone hitting the ground. The camera finally reveals the one responsible: a creature standing at a rather ridiculous height, that appears to be a cross between bird and man, dressed in traditional garb of the Edo period for those capable of recognizing such a thing. Any who are of intimate familiarity with the supernatural going's on of Japanese folklore might even notice the striking resemblance to a Tengu. Utsubushi regards the phone with an air of clear suspicion before crouching down to pick it up with two clawed fingers - the little gadget is barely half the size of his palm - and cock his head to one side so he might inspect it up close. ]

...Hmph. Sorcery.

[ He has no idea what he's looking at here aside from some creepy mystical knick-knack. Still, he seems to deem it worth further study. Straightening up, he tucks the phone away into the folds of his clothes, leaving it to record nothing but darkness until the feed times out. ]
